Comprehension/Making Meaning
Children are supported in developing skills that enable them to:-

-Explore aspects of plot, setting and charcters in stories with reference to the text

-Understand and describe events and ideas from texts - making reference to
the text and providing examples

-Provide alternatives to events and actions

-Deduce, infer and interpret information, ideas and events

-Develop an understanding beyond the literal and to assess the implications
of what has been read

-Differentiate between fact and opinion

-Evaluate what has been read and express opinions

-Use dictionaries and thesauri to obtain meanings of words/find words with similar meanings


Features and Characteristics of Texts
Children are supported in developing skills that enable them to:-

-Recognise and demonstrate understanding of the features and characteristics of written texts and compare   differences, for example, stories, poems, playscripts, advertisements, newspaper articles, instructions

-Explain and comment on the writers' use of language, strategies and techniques

-Identify and comment on writers' purposes in writing the text and viewpoint


Information Retrieval
Children are supported in developing skills that enable them to:-

-Apply knowledge of alphabetical order when searching for words in dictionaries and thesauri,
words and phrases in indexes and glossaries, and people/animals/places/topics in encyclopedias

-Sequence information - demonstrating the ability to remember the order in which information is presented

-Skim to gain understanding of the main idea of the text

-Scan for specific information in a text

-Use non fiction texts, - books, charts, annotated diagrams, encyclopedias, newspapers, leaflets, posters,   brochures and other printed media to obtain information

-Use the internet to obtain information

-Formulate key questions, select and apply appropriate research strategies
