Tuition in Spelling & Handwriting Skills in Reading and the Berkshire area

Early/Basic Spelling
For young children at the early stages of writing/spelling/handwriting and older children experiencing difficulties with spelling and/or handwriting. Age 4+

Designed to support young children or older children with spelling difficuties in early/basic spelling and/or handwriting.  Following initial assessments, children receive a series of planned lessons that cater for their individual needs. Depending on the child's level of development, lessons focus on the strong relationship between reading and spelling and include such aspects as:-

Phonemic Awareness
Phonemic awareness is a critical pre phonics, pre reading/spelling skill. Children need to become aware that sounds work together to form words and to learn to distinguish the sounds. For example, young children learn that putting these three sounds together c/a/t will make the word cat, that by changing some of the sounds new words are formed, e.g. s/a/t and s/i/t and that some words rhyme as in cat, sat, mat, hat.
However, children also need to learn that words are not always spelt as they sound.

Phonics/Letter Sound Correspondence
Various teaching methods are used to support children in developing understanding of the relationship between letters of the written language and the sounds/phonemes of spoken language. This is another essential skill for developing accurate spelling.

Spelling Strategies for Early Spellers
Children are taught spelling strategies including-
-looking for patterns in spellings, e.g. rhyming words/groups
-word families
-use of personal word books
-use of simple dictionaries
-use of the look, say, cover, write, check method to learn spellings.

Strategies for Intermediate Spellers
As children become competent in spelling basic words of one and two syllables, they are taught the spelling of an increasing range of words as well as spelling rules and strategies.

Handwriting
Teaching strategies are designed to ensure that children are-
-using the correct pencil grip
-using the correct positioning of the paper on the desk/table for writing
-forming letters correctly
-joining letters as soon as possible (this also aids spelling)
-practising handwriting
